Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS)

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) is becoming the gold standard for assisting in the diagnosis of children and adults on the autism spectrum. Many large institutions and research facilities include this tool as part of their diagnostic work-up on a regular basis, considering it to be a reliable measure also in terms of research. Unfortunately, families frequently face long waiting lists at hospitals or with other trained personnel for extended periods of time, which impacts the early detection of symptoms. Now this evaluation is available at ATA, making it simpler for families to know sooner the possibilities of what they are facing.

The ADOS examines the following areas:ADOS1

  1. Communication
  2. Social Interaction
  3. Play
  4. Imagination
  5. Stereotyped Behaviors
  6. Restricted Interests

The benefit of completing the ADOS at A Total Approach:

  1. Earlier availability of completing the schedule than at a larger institution
  2. Take the results to your developmental pediatrician/ physician, so you can avoid when necessary, the “wait and see” or “he is only a boy” or “it is possible he/she will grow out of it”
  3. Many children are misdiagnosed as being on the spectrum, when the true diagnosis could be a Sensory Processing Disorder with a Language Delay. At ATA we specialize in the area of sensory processing and could assist in distinguishing the difference
  4. At ATA we have access to many different programs under one roof and could direct the therapeutic treatment in a more time efficient manner

ADOS2We would like to stress that the ADOS is not a diagnostic evaluation, rather a screening tool.   As occupational therapists we do not diagnose. We are trained in completing the ADOS, which would indicate whether you or your child is found to be on the continuum.  This information would then be taken to your developmental pediatrician/ physician.
