Tomatis® Training


Tomatis® training by itself is not an FDA approved stand-alone program (as is the case with all sound interventions) and is not recognized in the USA as a medical intervention that seeks medical reimbursement. At our center we focus on occupational and physical therapy services in an adult-child one to one ratio and we add Tomatis training as one of our many tools.

Dr. Alfred Tomatis is considered the father of all the sound programs available today. Though many other sound programs claim to be "Tomatis® based", our Tomatis® training method is his original program through the official organization (TDSA) that continues to evolve in more sophisticated and increasingly effective outcomes. Maude Le Roux is a Registered and Certified Tomatis® Consultant. Maude is a national trainer in the US and South Africa for the Solisten® program, the official home based version containing the Tomatis® effect. While TDSA is based in Luxembourgh, we are one of multiple centers in the USA today and this is probably our most frequently used program in combination with our occupational and physical therapy services.

Dr. A. Tomatis


He was a doctor of medicine (Ear, nose, and throat physician) and a specialist in problems with hearing and language. Dr. Tomatis founded, and was the president of, the field of Audio – Psycho- Phonology at the School of Anthropology in Paris. Amongst many awards, he was awarded distinctively by the Paris Academy of Sciences and the Paris Academy of Medicine for creating the “Tomatis® Effect”, which was to be expressed by 3 laws:

  1. The voice only contains what the ear can hear
  2. If the hearing is modified, the voice is immediately and unconsciously modified.
  3. It is possible to durably transform phonation when auditive stimulation is maintained over a certain time (the law of duration or permanence)

Listening is not hearing. Hearing is the ability to discriminate different frequency ranges and is evaluated by audiologists. In Tomatis® Training we do not work with hearing. Most of the time persons would return from a visit to an audiologist with a perfect hearing score. Listening is the ability to use one’s hearing intentionally and attentively, and in a way that is acceptable on an emotional level, for the purpose of learning and communicating. It is a high level cortical function. Listening can be affected by developmental delays (too frequent occurrences of ear infection in early formative years being one red flag), auditory processing and communicative disorders, and emotional disturbances as well.

The Concept of Listening

There are 3 functions to the ear:

  1. The function of balance – The vestibule is a part of the inner ear, which informs the brain of the slightest body movement, it intervenes therefore in the control of posture and the maintenance of balance – our vestibular system.
  2. The function of Revitalization or Cortical Charge – The ear is very necessary in causing the cortex to be charged and therefore needs to be stimulated.
  3. The function of hearing – When this function is disrupted, difficulties in analysis, accommodation, spatialization or auditive lateralization are caused. The person experiences an influx of information, but perceives it in a distorted manner affecting comprehension, as well as impacting verbal expression. The person becomes fatigued, irritable and finally withdraws.

When we intervene using this method, we also work with the person in a one-on-one format through an extensive occupational therapy program. The person is actively participating in activities that would enhance sensory processing in general through all systems. As Occupational Therapists, we are interested in how this particular sense interacts with other senses we traditionally have worked with and the outcomes of the combination program have created many satisfied families over shorter spaces of time rather than doing traditional therapies alone.

The Tomatis® Method

We use an electronic system called the Electronic Ear or EE. Over the many years of program development, starting out with tapes of music, the EE has developed into a modern machine with digitalized music and computerized features. At our center we use the latest version the Tomatis® AudioPro and we also have 6 Solisten machines that we use in intensive programming as well as home programming. The EE is a system, which exploits and reactivates the strategies involved in perceptive organization and in the management of the sound environment.

A very important feature to the EE is the gating mechanism between two sound channels. This is based on the sound change between two channels on a double process of perceptive contrast (timbre/intensity).

Our brain works in such a way that our selective attention, which allows us to select a sound signal among all the possible ones so that it can be treated, is triggered if two conditions are brought together:

    • The new or unpredictable character of the sound signal
    • An increase in the intensity of this message

The gating mechanism of the EE triggers both conditions and this specific mechanism is very unique to the Tomatis® method and not replicated in any other product. The certified Tomatis® Consultant is able to specifically adapt each client’s program by changing the gating taking place on each CD processed through the EE.

Another important parameter to the Tomatis® Method is to achieve listening through air and bone conduction. As humans, we always hear and listen through both bone and air conduction when listening to ourselves and only air conduction when listening to others. We listen optimally when these two systems are well balanced, which is one of the primary goals of the Tomatis® Method.

When travelling through air conduction, the sound message arrives at the tympanic membrane through the airwaves, and the membrane’s vibration connects this with the tiny middle ear bones (an air cavity), then through the oval window to the sensorial cells in the Organ of Corti. From here the sound is processed through the vestibule-cochlear nerve  (CN8) to the brain. If the sound is travelling via bone conduction, the message is transmitted via the head bone through a vibrator, located in the frame of the headphone and rests on the middle of top of the person’s head, carrying the sound directly to the inner ear. This feature of bone conduction and being processed through the EE is very unique to the Tomatis® Method and should not be confused by bone conduction being used without a processor such as the EE.

Delay and Precession are other parameters used by the Tomatis® Method and also quite unique to the Tomatis® Method with no other product using this intricate process in today’s proliferation of sound therapies. Both actions contribute to the reeducation of the ear to improve its ability to attend and comprehend what it is listening to, which is the overall target of the Tomatis® Method. They work as time delays through the gating system as discussed above and assists in slowing down, modifying the time span of sound being gated through the channels. The Certified Tomatis® consultant is able to set these parameters for each individual client as per each CD listened to.

The Balance mechanism stimulates the client to use his/her right ear for controlling his/her voice, therefore communicating more effectively. The importance of this can not be understated. The right ear has a shorter, more direct route to travel to the left hemisphere where many lingual features, including features for reading are situated. Our left ear is more suited to go directly to the right hemisphere, where our brain is more concerned with environmental, spatial information with focused attention also on the limbic (emotional) association.

The Filters feature of the EE used in the Tomatis® method allows for reeducating the sound perception starting from the earliest form of listening in the mother’s womb to the fully advanced listening of a mature adult. Filters are electronic mechanisms in the EE intended to reduce the volume of chosen acoustic frequency ranges. This is the feature mostly attempted to be replicated by other sound therapies.

We use the Mother’s voice and record this at our center to be filtered through the EE at the frequencies that babies listen to while in their mother’s womb. Babies can hear sounds from their mother’s voice from her voice box through her spinal cord very specifically in the third trimester and is an important feature of emotional bonding between child and parent.

The Tomatis® Method also utilizes an Active Phase, which requires the person to use his/her voice by speaking, reading aloud, or singing through a microphone. The person’s voice and music are modified by the EE, and combine to incorporate the attended frequencies into the client’s voice, producing better vocal production. This form of active work has not been replicated by any other program as it is processed through the EE with settings set for each individual client by the Certified Tomatis® Consultant.

Tomatis® Program at ATA

Children (age 2 and up) and adults are treated through this program at our center. Throughout the school year we operate two scheduled intervention times occurring between 3 and 5pm, and also 5 to 7pm. During the busy summer months we add more time slots to our daily schedule to serve the need. Each session is two hours in length.
The client listens to mostly Mozart Music and Gregorian Chants, which is modified in whichever way the Certified Tomatis Consultant plans for each individual client.

Clients attend the program for periods of intensives ranging from 15, 12, to 10 days in succession depending on the individual needs of clients. Inbetween intensives clients may attend weekly services as they consolidate and create a functional adaptive response to the intensive stimulation received.

Consultation interviews are scheduled with the families. Listening tests on the Tomatis® Listening test machine are conducted where applicable before each consultation session. While the family is in the interview discussing observations of both home and clinical, the client is in a play session and this session is recorded on video. The team leader views an edited version of this video and provides video feedback to the families. This video progress report has proved invaluable for families in order to equip and empower them in understanding their child.

The Tomatis® Home Program

Many clients are saddened by their inability to access a Tomatis® center close by their home. Since this program requires quite a commitment in time, many clients simply live too far away to attend. Tomatis® Development SA designed a high quality product that enables more families to use the Tomatis Method in their home

Clients are trained at our center to use the TalksUp® device at home for the same sequence as our center based Tomatis program. Consultations will be scheduled as with frequency of the center based program with the option of completing the consultation over the internet.

The Tomatis® Program for Parents

Many parents want to know what their children or loved ones go through when they do the program. Some parents also identify with their children in their own profile and would like to complete the program themselves. We are able to complete a program in a separate room for parents to go through a similar program based on their individual profile at the same time. Since there is no therapy involved outside of the Tomatis stimulation, the fee for such a program is reduced.

We also provide the TalksUp® for home based use to either do the program simultaneously or complete the program after the child or loved one’s program has been completed.

Why Mozart?

Many families ask us this question and we decided to share with the reader some research and thoughts that have been completed on the use of Mozart.

Billie M. Thompson, PhD and Susan R. Andrews Ph.D wrote an article “An Historical Commentary on the Physiological effects of Music: Tomatis, Mozart and Neuropsychology”. This article was published in the “Integrative Physiological and Behavioral Science Journal in the July to September issue of 2000.

In this article they define very clearly the difference between the Mozart effect and the Tomatis effect as described by the three laws earlier in The Tomatis Method. It should not be confused with each other, even though Dr. Tomatis knew from his own and others research that Mozart was the music that really suited his program most ideally. The use of Mozart was confirmed in the research by independent researchers (mentioned below) shortly before and after his death.

J.S. Jenkins wrote an article in April 2001 that was published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine Volume 94.

The article was simply titled: “The Mozart Effect”. He writes: “Techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance scanning, together with studies on localized brain lesions, have shown that listening to music activates a wide distribution of areas. The primary auditory area lies classically in the transverse and superior temporal gyri, but particular components of musical appreciation involving rhythm, pitch, metre, melody, and timbre are processed in many different areas of the brain.”

“A more impressive indication of a Mozart effect is to be seen in epilepsy. In 23 of 29 patients with focal discharges or bursts of generalized spike and wave complexes, who listened to the Mozart sonata K448, there was a significant decrease in epileptiform activity as shown by the electroencephalogram (EEG). In one male, unconscious with status epilepticusm ictal patterns were present 62% of the time, whereas during the exposure to Mozart’s music this value fell to 21%. The fact that these improvements took place even in a comatose person, demonstrates again that appreciation of the music is not a necessary feature of the Mozart effect.”

“In an attempt to determine the physical characteristics which were responsible for the Mozart effect, Hughes and Fino subjected a wide range of music to computer analysis. As many as 81 selections of Mozart, 67 of J C Bach, 67 of J S Bach, 39 of Chopin, and 148 from 55 other composers were analyzed. The characteristic shown by much of Mozart’s music and shared with the two Bach’s was a high degree of long-term periodicity, especially within the 10-60s range. Another similarity between the music of Mozart and the two Bach’s was the emphasis on the average power of particular notes, notable G3 (196 Hz), C5 (523 Hz) and B5 (987 Hz).”

Researchers are still debating whether the Mozart Effect is what it says, but Dr. Tomatis combined this particular music with his Tomatis effect found in his EE (electronic ear) to provide us with a magnificent tool to use today and that is, after almost 60 years, still unsurpassed in power.

  21. You have difficulty with multi-step sequences and multi tasking.
  22. You have difficulty understanding hidden meaning of what was being said.
  23. You are having difficulty understanding stories as a whole with beginning, middle or end.
  24. You are sensitive to movement (boat, amusement park rides)
  25. You are an uncoordinated person
  26. You have never liked participating in sports.
  27. You are constantly rocking or moving
  28. You experience emotional difficulties and stress
  29. You experience increasing difficulty with memory as you age.
  30. You discover increasing balance difficulties as you age.

Tomatis® Pregnancy Program

Prospective mothers attend our center for the full Tomatis method or use the Solisten home program in the comfort of their own home for 2 intensives of 10 days each in their third trimester of pregnancy. Mothers listen two hours daily for the 10 days, take a 2- 4 week break, and then complete the second intensive of 10 days, listening 2 hours each day. The therapist will discuss the preferred activities during listening with each individual client.

This program is an important complement for every prospective mother, though also especially for parents who have had experience of difficult births before or has had the experience of an older sibling with special needs. We are very excited about having this program available for our mothers at our center as this could only enhance their newborn’s life since music has such a profound effect on the life of the child in the womb!!

What does the baby hear in the womb?

Music has always had an effect on people of all cultures all over the world. Nightclubs know what kind of music to play in the mid hours of the night to keep their clients going and going. Tribes have always used different forms of natural music instruments to display their sadness or their joy. Each one of us also know what type of music calms or excites us.

When the baby is still in the womb, he / she can hear his / her mother’s voice. From the voice box the sounds travel through the spinal column to reach the growing baby. When we were seeing our results in many children using the Tomatis Method, the thoughts always comes back, to what if we could prevent just a small percentage of what our children and families go through?

She wrote a great article on “The Importance of Prenatal Sound and Music”, which was published in the Journal of Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Health, 139304), Spring/Summer 1999, of which we would like to mention some excerpts. 

“In the past, women all over the world have sung lullabies to their babies. These were very important because we know the fetus is having first language lessons in the womb. The inflections of the mother tongue are conveyed not only through speech but most importantly through song. The singing voice has a richer frequency range than speech.” Dr. Alfred Tomatis was very interested in this area of development. She continues: “What the baby learns in utero are the intonational pattern of sound and the frequencies of a language in his/her particular culture.” “When the mother reads out loud, the sound is received by her baby in part via bone conduction. Dr. Henry Truby, Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics and Linguistics at the University of Miami, points out that after the sixth month, the fetus moves in rhythm to the mother’s speech and that spectrographs of the first cry of an abortus at 28 weeks could be matched with the mother’s. The elements of music, namely tonal pitch, timbre, intensity and rhythm, are also elements used in speaking a language. For this reason, music prepares the ear, body and brain to listen to, integrate and produce language sounds.”

Just very recently in 2007, an article in the Science Daily report research from Northwestern university that assists in confirming what Giselle Whitwell was saying here in 1999. The article reports on the study called: “Musicians have enhanced sub cortical auditory and audiovisual processing of Speech and Music” and was to be published online the week of September 24, 2007 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). (Gabriella Musacchia, Mikko Sams, Erika Skoe, and Nina Kraus). Study participants wore scalp electrodes that measured their multi-sensory brain responses to audio and video of a cellist playing and a person speaking.” “The study showed enhanced transcription of timbre and timing cues common to speech and music. The study underscores the extreme malleability of auditory function by music training and the potential of music to tune our neural response to the world around us. Previous research has shown brainstem transcription errors in some children with literacy disorders. Since music is inherently more accessible to children than phonics, the new research suggest, music training may have considerable benefits for engendering literacy skills.”

Giselle Whitwell continues: “Uterine sounds form a “sound carpet” over which the mother’s voice in particular appears very distinct and which the prenate gives special attention to because it is so different from its own amniotic environment. These sounds are of major importance because they establish the first patterns of communication and bonding. Some researchers discovered that newborns become calmer and more-self regulated when exposed to intra-uterine sound (Murooka, et. Al., 1976; DeCasper, 1983; Rossner, 1979).”

“The ear first appears in the third week of gestation and it becomes functional by the 16th week. The fetus begins active listening by the 24th week. We know from ultrasound observations that the fetus hears and responds to a sound pulse starting at 16 weeks of age (Shahidullah and Hepper, 1992), even before the ear construction is complete. The cochlear structures of the ear appear to function by the 20th week and mature synapses have been found between the 24th and 28th weeks (Pujol, et al., 1991). For this reason most formal programs of prenatal stimulation are usually designed to begin during the third trimester. The sense of hearing is probably the most developed of all the senses before birth.

“At around four to six weeks gestational age the vestibular and cochlear systems become differentiated, at seven the auditory ossicles start to grow, and at 4 months the ear of the fetus is already adult like in shape and size. The cochlear system enables the transformation of acoustic vibrations into nervous influx, thus allowing the perception of melodies which carry higher frequencies. Knowing this, one can have a better understanding of the intimate relationship and unity and melody.”

“Chamberlain (1998) using Howard Gardner’s concept of multiple intelligences, has presented evidence for musical intelligence before birth. Peter Hepper (1991) discovered that prenates exposed to TV soap opera during pregnancy responded with focused and rapt attention to this music after birth - evidence of long term memory. On hearing the music after birth, these newborns had a significant decrease in heart rate and movements, and shifted into a more alert state. Likewise, Shetler (1989) reported that 33% of fetal subjects in his study demonstrated contrasting reactions to tempo variations between faster and slower selections of music. This may be the earliest and most primitive musical response in utero.”

“William Liley, found that from at least 25 weeks on, the unborn child would jump in rhythm with the timpanist’s contribution to an orchestral performance. The research of Michelle Clements (1977) in a London maternity hospital found that 4 to 5 month fetuses were soothed by Vivaldi and Mozart but be disturbed by Beethoven Brahms, and Rock.” 

Tomatis Research with Pregnant Mothers

My experience with the Tomatis Pregnancy Program was wonderful. My baby would become quite active everyday when the music would begin. He would then relax and become very peaceful, as did I. Now that my son is 8 months old, I find that he is very aware of his surroundings. He is extraordinarily pleasant, inquisitive, and smart. He has hit every major mile stone at least a month early, and is well on his way to start walking! All in all, this was a fantastic experience.

Whitwell’s article continues to site more research and the reader is encouraged to e-mail her if more information is needed. Dr. Alfred Tomatis was always very interested in these early phases of development and research was completed on the effects of the Electronic Ear and the Tomatis Effect on the developing baby in the womb. The use of the Tomatis Method during pregnancy was begun in 1988 at the Maternity of the Vesoul, under supervision of Dr. Klopfenstein and Marie Ouvrard.  The results were so strongly in favor of the method that the Tomatis Method has become part of the hospital’s permanent practice.

More recently, Dr. Penet and Madame Tjordman undertook a similar study at the Hospital Foch de Suresnes. Three groups of pregnant women were elected. One group of 245 women had no special maternal care. Another group of 683 women had a maternal program consisting of breathing, relaxation, and a birthing pool. A total of 223 women had the above program and also the Tomatis Method. The results were as follows:

  • Decrease in labor time between control groups and groups who were prepared with the Tomatis Method.
  • The uterine dynamic of the women in the Tomatis group was greatly improved.
  • Babies of mothers in the Tomatis group had a superior birth weight to a gestational age that was more advanced.
  • APGAR scores showed the babies from the Tomatis group recouped faster and better than control group babies.
  • At Vesoul specifically they found a lesser need to use instrumental intervention with the Tomatis group mothers.
  • The mothers in the Tomatis group reported the following:
  • The quality of their dreams was peaceful and positive.
  • They did not experience the usual feeling at the end of pregnancy of being inhibited, strained or “handicapped”.
  • The disappearance of back pains
  • A normal walk
  • Better Listening
  • Increase in creativity
  • Their “psyche was on top of things”
  • The babies were calmer in the womb
  • Mothers felt more “well” and calm returning home with their babies.
  • The quality of the immediate bonding and mother / child relationship was improved.

So, we need more research in this area, but it is fascinating that we could possibly give a child the opportunity to a better start in life and possibly prevent more early life difficulties than we could even imagine now. Will science ever be able to keep up with the demand for knowledge that exists today?

Dear Maude and Angela,

I wanted to reach out to both of you and let you know how my boy is doing. I have been thinking of you all a lot lately as I reflect on the last 3 years.

Currently, He is attending a private school in the Bethesda, MD area called "The Harbor School". We couldn't have found a better fit for him. He has 2 teachers and 11 kids in his classroom. They follow an almost "floortime-like"approach to learning. He loves school and has fit in perfectly! We are still doing OT, speech, some visual therapy, and also feeding therapy at The Floortime Center. I have developed a lovely relationship with the staff there and my boy enjoys it!

I was on the A Total Approach website the other day, looking up some things about Tomatis to tell another Mom. I came across my testimonial after our first 3 intensives together, and I cried. It brought me right back to how I had felt first walking through your doors. You saved us. I was told by the developmental pediatrician right after his 3rd birthday that he would probably never be in a typical classroom, doing typical things, with the other typical children.

I pitied myself and cried for a few weeks. I then got to work, and after speaking with Angela after the new year, I immediately knew there was hope. Angela, you truly gave me hope! Maude, I still will occasionally look at the videos from our intensives to remember how far we have come. It has been nothing but up from there. Your entire staff over the years were nothing but loving and supportive.

I just can't thank you enough for helping us to get to this point. A side note, He found a pair of head phones and occasionally wears them and pretends he is playing in the "big gym".

I just wanted to share some nice news and say thank you for being such a blessing in my life!! You have been blessed with such wonderful gifts and I am so thankful you chose a path in life to help children.

My nice news…..My boy is doing amazing in school!!! He is such a hard worker and we are so proud of him. He has straight A's and was just accepted into the National Junior Honor Society and was inducted on January 17. He will be testing for his black belt in karate in May of this year and does some volunteer work in the community. High School starts in August!! He recently had updated CAPD testing and received age appropriate scores in all areas. He is so happy with his life and all his accomplishments. He has thanked us many times for bringing him to your center for help. He knows your help was so essential in helping his dreams come true. I can't thank you enough for helping him be the best he can be!! You will always have a special place in my heart.

A message from a very happy ATA family

Dear ATA Team,

My journey with you started many years back when I was a student pursuing my own career as an OT. I never knew how important meeting all of you would be. I got to see first hand the inner workings of the practice and I was blown away. Maude is the most caring and generous individual that I have met in this field. Her standards translate into the therapist she selects to work in her practice. She is constantly researching and learning about the mind and body and encourages her team to do the same. They are a team everyone seamlessly works together to help the client and the family.

When my oldest child at the age of 4 was identified as a child with sensory needs I was devastated. How was I going to help him? What I was doing alone was not enough. I remembered Maude and all the families she had helped and scheduled an appointment. The recommendations for my child included intensives and weekly sessions. I don’t know of any other practice that offers both. He did Tomatis intensives, DIR, IM and OT. He is now in 1st grade and doing amazingly well. His teachers do not believe that he ever had trouble sitting still, focusing and communicating. He is a bright confident student because of what we did at ATA. The best part, my son never knew it was therapy. He loves ATA and actually asks to go back to play there. I never wanted him to feel different or that there was something wrong with him. In my opinion his statements show how much the therapist care and how skilled they are in dealing with these delicate situations.

My youngest son had major issues with his speech and hearing. He essentially was not talking, saying single words and labeling but having a very hard time communicating. I kept pushing it off thinking he would come around. One of the senior clinicians informed me about the free screenings ATA was offering, to good to pass up and I could get some honest feedback. He started therapy that summer at age 3 (Tomatis and OT). I could cry talking about all the progress he has made. His speech blows me away, we now have conversations, he has a sense of humor, he tells me he wants to do it, I feel like I finally got to know my little boy. I had no idea of the things he was thinking and feeling because he couldn’t tell me. As a mother that felt terrible because I felt like I should know or I should find a way to figure him out. ATA helped me connect with my little boy in a way that we both desperately needed. They personalize every treatment plan as each of my children’s needs were different, it is NOT a one size fits all approach. He is so confident now, doing great with his peers at his preschool and asserting his independence at home. Just this week I was able to go grocery shopping alone with both boys. There were points in time where I didn’t dare do such a thing.

The last thing I wanted to touch on were the consult sessions with just the parents. They were so important, it felt like a collaborative effort in addressing the child’s needs. The post consult videos were a great way for me to share our child’s progress with my husband who travels for work. It opened up the conversation for us, as sometimes it can be difficult to talk about. ATA has changed my family’s life and well as the future of my children. My children now have the confidence and tools they need to be successful. As each day passes and they surprise me with the wonderful new things they are able to do, I know I made the right choice. ATA is the only choice for the entire family. Thank you Maude and the ATA team, I know we wouldn’t be where we are today without you.

Our days are clearer since we started coming to ATA. There is a new found feeling of hope and understanding in our family.

My kids love coming here and I believe ATA gives all of the children the tools they need to reach their fullest potential.

They identify the cause/causes of why things are the way they are and then there is a plan. Our plan involved Tomatis.

There is continuous feedback and communication during each session of Tomatis. After the last session there's a video of your child and the therapist during a session of play. While viewing this video there are breaks throughout the video that explain behavior/activities that are occurring during the session. The video is a wonderful way to acknowledge,appreciate and document your child's progress.

ATA shows you the light at the end of the tunnel....then together they take you to that light! It has been such a remarkable, unbelievable journey for our family!

"Everything started to come together"

Hi Maude,

I wanted to share with you how well A. is doing. He completed the Tomatis program at ATA at age 4. At that time he had sensory integration dysfunction, a language delay and problems interacting appropriately with peers as well as severe food preferences. Within the first week of the program, he started to be able to fall into a deep sleep quickly. During the program, his anxiety decreased, he became more flexible and his language expanded. Within the 2 months after completing Tomatis, it was as if someone flipped a switch and everything started to come together. He started to made significant progress with his fine motor skills and core strength and the problems he had in keeping his hands to himself and other sensory seeking behaviors disappeared. He was discharged from the IU later that year as he had made so much progress he no longer qualified for services.

When the IU teacher went to observe him at school, she had to ask the teacher to identify him and later told me "A. could be a role model for the other students." One of his teachers called him the "mayor" of his preschool as he knew everyone and was always so kind to all of the students and staff. It took some more time to resolve his problem eating, but I am happy to report that while still somewhat picky, A. eats a very healthy and balanced diet.

A. is in first grade now and is doing great. If I mention his earlier struggles to people now, they don't believe me. Tomatis was the game changer for my son and our family and we can't thank you enough.

"A 180 degree turn"


J. and I can't get over the changes since the Intensive Therapy (Tomatis etc.) and the Cellfield. His demeanor and how he handles things have gotten so much more even keeled. My dad even commented that R's behavior and how he handles situations have gotten so much better since the last summer. My niece has in my opinion, undiagnosed ADHD... nonetheless, she is all over and before she and R would feed off each other. When they were up a few weeks ago, R's behavior and his handling of her where so much of a 180 degree turn, it was amazing. Before, when he would go into overload with her I couldn't get him to talk to me and reason and walk away. This time, I sensed he was going into overload. I pulled him aside and told him he needed to walk away that I could tell he was going into overload. There was a little bit of arguing (about one-minutes worth) and then he walked away from the situation AND helped me with some heavy work to get him stabilized again! That wouldn't have happened last year!

Also, an update on the Cellfield.. beforehand R. was never able to really visualize the story as he was reading it. He just read it like rote. A few days ago he was reading a book in the series called "Geronimo Stilton" which is grade level 3-5. He read three chapters of the book and half way through the three chapters he told me " Mom, it is like I am in the book. I can see it happening!" Those were the most wonderful words I have ever heard. Up until now he could never see the events happening as he read them. Now he does. I told him, that is why reading is so much fun! It takes you away to another place where you can really be in the book and live what is happening. He got it!

"He has a terrifically-bright future"

My name is N.S., and my son H.S. received Tomatis therapy with your team back in 2004. We think of you frequently but this afternoon my wife and I spoke of you again. H., now 9, is in third grade and participates in an accelerated academic program in our public school.

Today my wife and I attended a PowerPoint presentation, about jellyfish, that he gave to his classmates, all of whom also tested into this accelerated program. We were so proud of him that we almost both cried during his presentation. When he was initially diagnosed with an autism-spectrum disorder, we were terrified about his future.

Today, he is in gifted programs at school, he is one of the best ballplayers on his baseball team, he plays piano, has lots of friends, and has a terrifically-bright future.

We recognize how lucky we are, but particularly lucky to have had you in his life. Thank you.

"She started on the Solisten and the changes are amazing"


Just want to share this news with you. I had a adult CVA patient on the Solisten Program. He is doing so well sice starting the Solisten he is back at work (he is a radiologist), he can drive put up drips etc. His wife is singing the Solisten's praise. It made a huge difference in his participation restrictions. The physical therapist was amazed in his motor control progress. She is now only seeing him once a week after we started with the Solisten.

Then I have a SEVERE tactile defensive little girl (5 years old) that is currently on the Program. She was very resistant to the brushing protocol and the only thing I thought of to use was the Solisten. Her SIPT diagnosis is praxis on verbal command and somatodyspraxic. She almost never has clothes on and does not wash her hair. She has poor planning and battles to talk and socialize with other children, her cognitive ability is superior but is doesn't look like it. She started on the Solisten and the changes are amazing, her mom is astonished and overwelmed. Her speech has improved within the first 4 sessions and her spatial awareness is amazing. Her play has even gone up a level and she is now imagining things that she was not able to do before. She actually looks smart now.

"A Wonderful Experience"

My experience with the Tomatis Pregnancy Program was very beneficial. My baby would become quite active everyday when the music was first played. He would then relax and become quite peaceful, as did I. Now that my son is 8 months old, I find that he is very aware of his surroundings. He is extraordinarily pleasant, inquisitive, and very smart. He has hit every major mile stone at least a month early, and is well on his way to start walking!

All in all, this was a wonderful experience.

"I feel like my son is back"


My seven year old son does not have any diagnosis, but awhile back I noticed that his general anxiety level was quite heightened. He would be intensely focused on time – commenting when we were mere minutes off from something we had said, for instance if he was told we would be home in half an hour he would point out that the ride only took 28 minutes not 30. He would get tearful every evening around bed-time, which got increasingly worse to a point where he would essentially cry himself to sleep most nights of the week – regardless of the emotional, physical or mental support we tried to offer. He would also wake up at 4 or 5 in the morning and not be able to fall back asleep. I felt that I was failing him as a parent.

Maude LeRoux and Angela Johnson suggested I put him through the 3 loops of Tomatis, I figured that I would give it a shot – I have seen so many kids make great progress in this program and thought I would try it. The first loop was pretty good, his anxiety seemed lessened and the time concern was diminished. I remember the first morning he slept until 6:30am again – I was so happy that he'd slept through the night. He also became less teary at night around bed-time, and I felt so relieved – I could see my son coming back.

The second loop was a bit tougher for me to go through, he became more emotional and teary in general. Maude and Angela (and everyone else) supported us through this challenging time with promises that there was a light at the end. And sure enough, he has now completed his 3rd loop of Tomatis and I see the light. He is no longer hyper-emotional, his anxiety has decreased tremendously – he no longer fidgets as much as he used to and is able to complete his homework neatly the first time without having to redo it, he does not worry about every minute of time, and he goes to bed calmly – no longer crying himself to sleep which had torn me so apart for so long. I feel like my son is back. Even my husband who was a bit skeptical at first has noted the difference that Tomatis made.

These are two similar stories from before Tomatis and then after. When he plays with the neighborhood kids we always tell him to be home at 6:30pm for dinner. Before – he would always, always, be home before or at 6:30pm exactly. One day he came in at 6:32pm and apologized profusely but told me that his shoelace came untied and it took him two minutes to tie it, and I could see the anxiety in him that he was those 2 minutes late. After – one day I noticed it was 6:40pm and he wasn't home yet. I went outside and saw him playing with the kids. He was more into having fun and playing with his friends, anxiety about precise minutes was gone. When I told him what time it was he said "really? Sorry mom."

But that anxiety wasn't there anymore – he was like a regular kid again.

"Maude, I'm telling you – there is no way Alex would've been able to do this before Tomatis! His language has skyrocketed since we started coming to you. Plus he has the focus and he is so much more social with us and everyone now that his senses are not so overwhelmed. This is part of the reason it brings tears to my eyes – because I know that he understood every line, he meant what he said, and he was happy to create something special for me. I am so blessed!!"

Our son Kevin was diagnosed with PDD at age two. It was quite devastating after receiving this news and thinking about the challenging road ahead for our son and our family.

We can attest that there is a haven of hope and compassion out there for children like our son. This amazing place is A Total Approach providing parents with a goldmine of knowledge under the guidance of Maude Le Roux. This center is filled with the most dedicated and talented team of therapists and clinical assistants. Our son loves coming to A Total Approach to play with his wonderful therapists, Nicole and Karen, each week. He conveys this by continuously expressing "truck" (our van), "beach" (the bridge we cross over) and "balls, jump, slide, train" (his favorite activities to play at ATA). He would never be able to communicate this simple sequence without going through the miraculous intensive Tomatis program. Before Tomatis, we dreaded those times when invited to visit relatives, a friend's home or even attempting to venture a short trips to the store. We were always filled with anxiety waiting on the moment when Kevin could no longer cope with his unpredictable environment by having a huge meltdown. After just a few days of Tomatis, we began to observe unbelievable positive changes of Kevin initiating engagement with us, coping with frustration a little easier and following through on verbal direction without the usual visual and physical cues.

Update on Kevin's progress, now four years old and after completing four loops of Tomatis. Our son enjoys going over to play with his cousins; he initiates wanting to go with his grandfather to the supermarket and help pick out the fruits and vegetables. He also grins from ear to ear anticipating his grandmother to sing their special song. The most recent precious event is sitting back and watching both our son and two year old daughter chase each other joyfully around the house and then warmly engage in an embrace.

We are so grateful to Maude, Charl, Angela, Nicole, Karen, Janice, Eileen and all staff members for their devotion to Kevin, the positive spirit every time we walk through the door at A Total Approach and for giving us this priceless gift to our son and family.

Dear Maude,

When I first came to you, I didn't know what direction to go with my daughter Sarah. I knew she needed ...something, that things couldn't go on as they were. None of the experts could explain her unique set of issues, or find a way to help us. And then I found A Total Approach, and she got the kind of help that she'd needed all along. Here's an update on her progress.

It's been a few months now since Sarah's last round of Tomatis therapy, and she's still doing beautifully. As you know, I was the ultimate skeptic when I first learned about Tomatis therapy, but there was so little out there to help her (with her sensory processing disorder), that I decided to give it a try. Sarah had everything to gain, and nothing to lose, so I took a leap of faith.

During the first week of Tomatis therapy, I noticed that Sarah was much more sensitive to sensory stimulus. She was irritable and not easy to manage. This might seem like a negative outcome to some parents, but I knew that you were hitting the right target, or there wouldn't have been any change at all. I hung in there, and looked forward to her first month off. By the second round of therapy, Sarah was definitely more "together". It's hard to explain, but she was just more...Sarah.

Over the summer she had her ups and downs. There were little glimpses of her problems resolving. She was more reasonable more of the time, but she remained irritable and sensitive. It's hard to discern what was the result of therapy, and what was the result of just being a twelve year old girl. She seemed to insulate herself from the world a little more than usual, spending most of her time independently. She didn't seem particularly happy or sad, so I gave her time to

School started again just after the third round of therapy, and by then the difference in Sarah was amazing. My favorite comment from a teacher was, " I used to see Sarah walking down the hall with fifteen books, and she'd be dropping ten of them. Now she's just carrying five." Friends and family have commented that her posture seems improved, that she walks with more confidence. And, many teachers have commented on her improved handwriting skills. As a parent, it's always a pleasure to hear so many positive comments about my child, but the real reward is the difference that Sarah feels. She seems so much more comfortable just being herself.

From the time we started last spring, until we finished this fall, Sarah's growth and development have been amazing. The degree of change that Sarah has experienced in this short time is much more than anyone could attribute to maturation alone. When I first came to you I had very low expectations about what Tomatis therapy could do for my daughter. I thank you now for the insight and guidance that you gave us then. I was the ultimate skeptic, and now I'm the ultimate convert. Keep up the good work, and we'll keep in touch,

Jacob has been going to A Total Approach for about two years and has come so far. Jacob has Epilepsy as a result from an abnormally formed brain. With this, his development has been very delayed. Knowing early on there would possibly be a delay in language of some sort we did not know what to expect or do. It is true that his speech is the biggest delay along with some fine motor, processing and other delays. We began with one session a week for extra OT time – started the sensory diet to help with the sensory challenges and worked on the strength and fine motor skills. Summer of 2007 it was agreed that Jacob has come so far with his strength that he was ready to join in a group session with two other children to increase his social ability. About the same time we were gearing up for the IEP, I began to feel the strain of "1" more year until main stream schooling and how Jacob's speech was not anywhere close to being ready . We asked what else we could do for Jacob at ATA. I met with Maude and discussed the Tomatis program. As Jacob began to really start verbalizing so much more during the summer this seemed to be the next step to enhance his ability and drive to communicate with his newly found voice. We started in September and are currently in the third loop. Since the start we have seen such a change, he is more attentive, physical, starting to imaginary play (more with each loop) and his words... I cannot keep up with the list as this is just advancing so much. A Total Approach has been the extra enhancement with Jacob and brings together all the efforts from home and preschool that ties us in to have "A Total Approach"!

I first called A Total Approach late on a Friday afternoon seeking information for an evaluation for my son, then 3 years old. I had a return call from Angela within the hour! Talking with her I knew right away that I had found the right place to seek answers and solutions for my son. She was so incredibly knowledgeable! We proceeded with the evaluation, Tomatis, occupational and physical therapy. That journey began 2 years ago. Each step along the way we see dramatic and steady changes and this team has been with us every step of the way. Their knowledge and skills are beyond anything I have seen anywhere else in our path toward healing for our child and we feel so fortunate to have found them. Thank you Angela, Maude, Janice, and Maribeth; you have brought our family from despair to harmony.

A Fortuitous Journey

Our journey to A Total Approach was rather fortuitous. Our daughter exhibited some atypical symptoms from infancy on, including high energy, unnecessary roughness and aggression towards others and herself, decreased attention, and decreased tolerance to certain elements such as pain and temperature. However, because of her otherwise typical, and in many cases higher than typical, functioning in areas such as language, communication, social interaction, and overall motor development, we were often told (by our pediatrician and psychologist) that she was just an 'active' child and that we would need to wait for school to begin before any formal diagnosis could be made.

As both an educator and parent, this information did not resonate well with me. I watched as my daughter developed compensatory mechanisms (laughing to divert attention when she couldn't build blocks, for example) that were at times negative and inappropriate. I watched as her childhood friends began to do things that were difficult for her, and thus watch her retreat to the familiar and/or avoid new activities. I cringed when I heard my toddler declare "I can't", not because of defiance, but rather because she truly could not. This is when I realized these early years were crucial for her self esteem, confidence, and sense of self. I immediately began searching for answers and grew increasingly frustrated at the lack of response from the medical community for my 'typical' child.

When she finally entered preschool at age 3, her teacher mentioned the term Sensory Integration (SI) and thought that we should look into occupational treatment. Though I had not heard of the term distinctly, I found immediate relief in knowing I could finally search for support, and through a series of phone calls and referrals, found myself in the lobby of A Total Approach.

My journey is not a unique one, unfortunately. Many do not know of sensory integration, and most have not heard of occupational therapy for preschoolers. The medical community is slow to pick up on the benefits of early sensory integration treatments, resulting in low reimbursements from insurance companies and many families who cannot afford to help their children.

Thus begins my new journey–not only to continue to provide ongoing support and guidance for my daughter, but also to raise awareness about the importance of early intervention for sensory integration. I am now completing my PHD dissertation on the effects of Tomatis on children with SID, in hopes of disseminating this much needed information to physicians, social workers, and others so that many others can be treated.

In my heart, early treatment is nothing short of a miracle. My daughter, now 4, and after 3 loops of Tomatis and a year of weekly OT sessions, is a happy, confident, self aware little girl. She is stronger physically, has more focus, is calmer, and most importantly, is more self aware and knows that she can try anything. This new confidence allows her to interact with her peers more appropriately, and climb to new heights, both figuratively and literally. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that early intervention mitigated her risk of subsequent problems, including depression, anxiety, and other learning or behavioral disorders.

My husband and I now take great pleasure in watching her grow, and are better parents as we are now aware of the disorder and her specific needs. ATA is truly a multidisciplinary, exemplary model system of care. Thanks to everyone at ATA and may we all, as parents, educators, and researchers, continue to raise awareness of the importance of helping our youngsters become the best they can be.

I want to tell you about my son Ryan. Ryan is now 5 years old and will be attending Bethel Springs Elementary School in the fall. His pre-school teachers gave him excellent marks on his report card and were extremely confident that he was ready for Kindergarten. Ryan was tested by the school district themselves and scored extremely high in reading and at grade level in math. He is very excited to be going to the same school as his brother and in fact may have the same teacher. Ryan also enjoys taking karate and swimming classes with his brother as well. Ryan is very social and enjoys playing with his friends. He also has a wonderful imagination and enjoys pretending. As I describe my son to you now you may find it shocking to know that my son is autistic.

In fact Ryan's future was grim three years ago. The therapist who first saw Ryan told us that he would never catch up to his peers. Cognitively he would always be behind. Their only treatment was Speech and OT therapy that would begin as soon as possible but took three agonizing months to begin. Soon after the diagnoses Ryan began to bang his head and tantrum 10 to 15 times a day. Ryan's tantrums could last hours and would continue through the night. Speech and OT helped but progress was slow and time consuming. Speech therapy brought about some language but it was robot like and unnatural. When I read more about autism I found the symptoms overwhelming. How was I going to teach my son to speak spontaneously, socialize with other children, or use his imagination. How do you learn these things when you have absolutely no desire to?

Our lives changed one day when my sister heard about Tomatis therapy on the Today Show. It was a story about a little girl just like Ryan that is now recovered because of Tomatis Therapy. I quickly had Ryan evaluated with A Total Approach and treatment began quickly. The therapists were extremely experienced and I felt completely comfortable with them. The first time I spoke to Maude everything began to make sense. I felt confident that this was the place for my son. The first three days of Tomatis were uneventful but on the fourth day Ryan spoke his first spontaneous sentence. He said "I see a truck." I couldn't believe it. From then on Ryan progressed. He began to socialize with other children and started to pretend play. We would anticipate each new loop because the results were so dramatic and quick. Speech and OT were still helpful but more so now. Now that he could process language better these therapies were much more effective.

We now see a bright future for our son. I see him in college, getting married, having children. We are a far cry from where we were three years ago. Now as Ryan finishes his last loop of Tomatis my family celebrates. My son is on the road to recovery. We have hope instead of hopelessness. We are encouraged instead of defeated and now we have our son back.

ATA has given us a "roadmap" to early therapeutic intervention which has been invaluable to our son's developmental progress. Once we obtained a diagnosis, knowing what to do with it, and how to help our son was by far our most difficult challenge. ATA has helped us to answer the question...."Where do we go from here?"

We began by obtaining a detailed sensory profile which has enabled us to effectively target our son's greatest areas of need, with an eye toward identifying and maximizing his strengths. ATA has implemented a comprehensive and cohesive approach, which carefully integrates all aspects of our son's needs across speech, occupational and physical therapies. The specialized skill and compassion of each staff member is self-evident, along with the fact that they each work tirelessly to gather and share data across all therapy environments.

In the year since our son's diagnosis, he has made developmental strides (in language, socialization and behavior), some have characterized as dramatic. ATA's role in his progress simply cannot be overstated. From our vantage point as parents, ATA has become "the quarterback" of our son's developmental team.

From the initial sensory evaluation, through Tomatis therapy, and now intensive weekly therapies, ATA continues to provide our son with the tools which are helping him to amaze us all. We are truly blessed to have ATA on our team!!!!!!!

Tomatis Testimonial

Our son, Philip, age 18, completed 3 loops of Tomatis during the summer of 2005. Philip was significantly brain injured at 10 months of age secondary to severe complications of rotavirus. Philip is non-ambulatory and nonverbal. Due to his total dependency in all self-care needs, he was placed in an Intermediate Care Facility at age 14 but continues to return home frequently throughout the year.

Philip had an occasional word and was able to maintain his body weight for transfers until he was 14. Philip then underwent surgery for the placement of Herrington rods and after kidney stone complications, has not stood up since that time. Tomatis was considered for Philip to reactivate his motivation to communicate, reduce self-stimulation behaviors particularly rocking, and to improve muscle tone.

Philip's first loop proved eventful. A noticeable difference in muscle tone was observed. Philip's arms and legs became stronger. He was able to weight bear on his legs for a maximum of 30 seconds. Also rocking decreased at his ICF and school. On his second loop, Philip very unexpectedly began to initiate a stand. He would rock himself to the edge of his wheelchair, plant his feet just so, lean forward, and try to extend his hips and knees. This was a new skill. On his third loop, Philip shocked us. He stood up! Although his balance is still very poor, he delighted himself with this new skill and would continue to practice it until fatigued.

The new skills have awed all involved in Philip's care. It is not known how far Philip will improve in gross-motor skills through Tomatis. Refresher loops will most certainly be in his future. We hope to see Philip able to move more via a gait trainer or walker and for words to return so that his needs can be readily met.

We enrolled our son Patrick in the Tomatis program in July of 2004. Patrick was almost 4 years old and has a diagnosis of PDD-NOS. We decided to enroll Patrick because even though he has received intensive interventions since he was 18 months old we were concerned with Patrick's auditory processing abilities. In addition, we were also concerned about his lack of ability to ask or answer questions. We also felt that his lack of understanding was also holding back his opportunities for peer interactions.

Now that Patrick has completed the first 3 loops of Tomatis we have seen an amazing improvement. His teachers and therapists and friends and family also noted this, though many of them did not know that Patrick had completed three loops of Tomatis. However, they noticed the gains that Patrick had made! We feel that Patrick made very positive gains in the following areas:

  • Spontaneous speech
  • Better understanding (including concepts)
  • Beginning to ask more questions and he now has the ability to answer questions more comprehensively
  • Improved complex thinking and problem solving
  • Improved peer interaction (excellent interaction with his twin brother since Tomatis)
  • More sustained play and attention
  • More typical behavior

We are extremely happy with the results of Tomatis for our son Patrick. Patrick also participates in a comprehensive home DIR program, which we feel also worked very well in conjunction with Tomatis.

Zoe White is my daughter. She is a beautiful little girl. She loves to sing and dance and her laughter is contagious. Zoe is also diagnosed with PDD NOS. She is very high-functioning, even atypical for a PDD NOS diagnosis. Her language is significantly delayed. She communicates using 2 word phrases. We are just now learning how much she actually knows. Zoe also has intense sensory processing deficits. Zoe is ultra sensitive to noise. The sound of a lawn mower sends her scrambling up my leg with terror in her eyes. She is under sensitive to touch. She is aggressive. She hugs too hard; plays too rough; feels very little pain.

Zoe has been in early intervention since she was 18 months old. She receives most of the services available to children with her diagnosis. Still we were not seeing the progress we had hoped for. I brought Zoe to a screening at A Total Approach. I was extremely impressed at how efficiently they identified Zoe's areas of need. They told me about the different services they provide and which would be appropriate for Zoe.

Angela felt that Tomatis would give us the most effective results based on Zoe's profile. I researched Tomatis, talked to other parents and discussed the process, at length, with the therapists of A Total Approach. We decided to go for it. The listening therapy is integrated with DIR, OT and Sensory Integration. I think she feels like she is there to play.

The first loop was rigorous. It awakened all of her senses and for a short time she was like an exposed nerve. After the second loop we noticed her aggressive behaviors were decreasing. She began to ask for things she knew would calm her. She started identifying students, teachers, and therapists at her preschool. She is identifying colors with greater consistency. While watching Sesame Street, an episode on bathing, she looked at me and said, "Tubby, ice cream, mommy's bed, and night night." I was speechless. She had verbally sequenced our evening ritual.

Zoe also comes to A Total Approach for individual DIR. The DIR component has helped Zoe and our family so much so, that my mother and I will be attending the conference in the spring.

We are currently in the middle of the third loop. I have been pleased with the results so far. After this loop we will continue to come to ATA for DIR. In summation, we have seen greater progress in the past 3 months of Tomatis/DIR, and individual DIR sessions, than all of the other services she has received and continues to receive.



This little boy underwent three intensives of Occupational Therapy with Tomatis Sound Therapy.

My husband and I, and my entire family cannot express enough gratitude for what you have done for my son. I had a little boy that I hated being around (How can a mother even say this about her own son). Temper tantrum after temper tantrum – day in and day out…. I did not know what to do. Of course I loved my son so very much, but I could not believe his behavior.


After meeting with Angela, I knew there was hope. It has been nothing but positive improvements ever since. I can go to the grocery store without meltdowns. We can go to the park and not only does he want to swing on the swings, but he actually asks other kids to play with him. His imaginative play has become unbelievable. We have full blown back and forth conversations, too. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would be where we are with him today. You have changed my life. And best of all – you have changed this little boy’s life that so desperately wanted help.
